The scholarship program is aimed at helping people deepen their understanding of democracy and enhance their ability to strengthen democratic progress. With programs for courageous activists and academics from around the world, as well as for foreign policy professionals. NED provides opportunities for its fellows to explore new ideas and share best practices in a comparative context.

To access

All applicants must:
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency.
    Propose a project focused on the political, social, economic, legal or cultural aspects of democratic development.
  • Be available to work in residence at the International Forum for Democratic Studies in Washington, D.C. during the 5-month scholarship period (October 1-February 28 or March 1-July 31). No other scholarships or jobs can be done at this time.

Applicants on the professional’s track must:

  • Have substantial practical experience working to promote democracy or human rights in their country of origin or interest
  • Be mid-career professionals

Applicants on the academic path must:

  • Possesses a doctorate (a doctorate or academic equivalent) at the time of application
  • Have a proven record of publications in your field.
  • You have developed a detailed research scheme for your scholarship project.
